TALLI ROLAND

Making Time to Write

As the mother of an almost one-year-old and as a full-time writer with two books coming out next year, people sometimes ask how I find the time to write.  I wish I could magically ‘find’ time, like a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. If I kept waiting for more hours to appear in the day, though,  I’d never scribble a sentence! The key to getting the words down is making time.

We all have busy, full-to-bursting lives: jobs, partners, other hobbies, and responsibilities pulling us in a million directions. It’s easy to put writing on the backburner amidst everything else clamouring for attention, and by the end of the week, realise with horror you haven’t penned even a sentence. I’ve found the best way to avoid this is to set a goal: by the end of the day, for example, I task myself with writing 3,000 words. No matter what happens – whether the baby naps, if a hundred emails plop into my inbox – I know that before I can sleep, I need to get those words down. And by the end of the week, if I stick to that daily word count, I’ll have almost a quarter of a first draft completed. It might be rubbish, and I might end up cutting half, but it’s a start.

So, if you’re struggling to fit in writing with everything else in your life – particularly at this busy time of year – then stop waiting for a magical block of time to fall into your lap. Instead, snatch any spare minutes, write what you can, and keep moving forward with your book. Before you know it, the words will pile up!
