WHO NEEDS MR DARCY (Little, Brown 2012)
Who Needs Mr Darcy? is a subversive but affectionate spoof of one of Jane Austen’s minor characters in Pride and Prejudice.
Lydia Bennet Wickham, Lizzie’s silly little sister, is now a more sophisticated nineteen. Her disappointing husband has conveniently died at Waterloo and the world lies before her. She is penniless but ambitious, hungry for glamour and high society. What does she do?
Lydia’s chief ambitions are to find a wealthy protector (even a husband), to dance at Almack’s Assembly in London and eventually to live in Paris. She would also like her hero, Lord Byron, to cross her path, but that may be an ambition too far. With the assistance of her wily maid Adelaide and her equally impecunious friends, Selena and Miles, she ricochets around the continent as well as Brighton, Bath, London and Pemberley, having various adventures which usually end in disaster…
